Shout-Out Sunday No. 11 – Linda, Linda, Linda xxx

The Shout-Out Sunday web site for today, 16 March 2014, is simply a song. A song that I have kept in my top five songs of all time for many, many years now. And it is sung for you here by the Queen of Song, Ms. Linda Ronstadt:

“Long Long Time”

Love will abide, take things in stride

Sounds like good advice but there’s no one at my side

And time washes clean love’s wounds unseen

That’s what someone told me but I don’t know what it means

Cause I’ve done everything I know to try and make you mine

And I think I’m gonna love you for a long long time

Caught in my fears, blinking back the tears

I can’t say you hurt me when you never let me near

And I never drew one response from you

All the while you fell all over girls you never knew

Cause I’ve done everything I know to try and make you mine

And I think it’s gonna hurt me for a long long time

Wait for the day you’ll go away

Knowing that you warned me of the price I’d have to pay

And life’s full of flaws, who knows the cause?

Living in the memory of a love that never was

Cause I’ve done everything I know to try and change your mind

and I think I’m gonna miss you for a long long time

Cause I’ve done everything I know to try and make you mine

And I think I’m gonna love you for a long long time.

~music & lyrics by Gary B. White, sung by Linda Ronstadt

I’ve loved Linda since I first heard her sing back in the 1970’s I think. I bought all her vinyl record albums (which are still stored here in the basement) and then when technology turned to 8-track cassettes, I bought those, and when it turned to smaller cassettes, I went to those, and to CD’s, well, I bought many of hers again.. so I’ve done my part in helping to support Linda’s career.

But this song above, “Long Long Time” just does something to me. I think it may be because it reminds me of a certain someone (see pic below) who was very important to me, someone I loved with all my heart and soul at the time this song was popular, but someone who was never to be mine… and has sadly passed away at an all-too-young age.

There are quite a few songs that take me to another dimension like this song does, a place where there was no pain, no worries, just youth doing what youth does, enjoying life as it came along. And some days as I try to make it through each day now, I feel the need to just go back – back to those days of free spirits, yes, free love, and just a spiritual freedom that seems so elusive these days.

Enjoy my offering today. I’m sure all of you know only too well the genius of this wonderful singer as well as I do. I think I need to go hunting thru my CDs now and put on one of her albums… just right for a lazy Sunday morning.

Cheers to the Queen of Song – Linda Ronstadt!

It’s in every one of us, by and bye.

  1. She is a very brave soul. Linda is getting better and better spiritually. I love what she’s doing for immigration reform!

I fondly remember that song. It always had a warm but still bittersweet feeling to it.

Sad to hear that LR has Parkinson’s. She’s only 67, not old at all… 😦

Oh yeah, Emmylou is another in my top 5 faves… will have to do a blog about her one day… love her. Not so much of a Dolly fan though, and not sure why, I love her spirit but just not her voice so much.

(later)… Just listened to a couple of videos of Emmylou, Dolly and Linda… oh my, the 3 of them are perfection!

Lovely, Bex. Goosebumps all the way. I didn’t know this song but one of my all-time favourite albums is ‘Trio’ with Linda, Emmy Lou Harris and Dolly Parton. Happy Sunday xxx

I didn’t realize she had Parkinson’s. What a shame. There were some wonderful things going on during the sixties and early seventies. For all the tragedies, despite the war du jour, it looked like the world might be moving in the right direction. Was it just the optimism of youth? Can young people today actually feel like things are getting better? I don’t see it, but then for their sake I hope I’m just an old man who’d lost touch.

You said a mouthful Maggie. Love is the magic… and there really is a lot of magic in this world, even amidst all the other stuff… love is just that unexplainable thing that keeps us all guessing. xxx

  7. Bex, I listened to the song, it has more depth now, knowing how it is connected to the magic of love in your life. Love is the real magic of life.

I know, TS, in fact I just watched an interview she did on one of the morning talk shows – about her book “Simple Dreams” and a little about her Parkinson’s. She is a trooper… what a spirit! She does not like to dwell on it publicly and just says “something’s gotta get ya in the end…” – I love her so much.

That picture of her (the article was written in 2008) is awful but she appears much more normal looking on the show I saw. She was probably on some strong steroids or drugs when that was taken…
